Sowers helps sponsor festivals meals in Thailand
Sowers of the Seed through Apple Ridge Ministries helped to sponsor meals for brethren, observing the 2016 spring festivals of Passover and Unleavened Bread in northern Thailand. Brian Drawbaugh, an elder with Apple Ridge Ministries, invited Sowers and other ministries to contribute to this special outreach to arrange for special meals during the festivals, which usually include more meat than usual and ice cream.
Staszak to present paper on Johannine narrator at regional conference
Sowers director, Gary A. Staszak (M.A., CAS), a postgraduate student at University of Wales Trinity Saint David, has been invited to present his paper entitled, "Narrator in John: A Disguised Character," during the Society of Biblical Language's New Testament section at the Southeast Commission for the Study of Religion (SECSOR) Annual Meeting in Raleigh, N.C., March 3-5, 2017. The subject of the paper is research on the narrator as specialized character in the Fourth Gospel completed at St. Mary's Ecumenical Institute (EI) under the supervision of EI instructor Christopher Skinner, Ph.D.
Dr. Tom Roberts Interviewed by Dr. Alonzo Gaskill
Sowers specialist Tom Roberts was interviewed in early October by Alonzo Gaskill, Ph.D., who is assistant professor of Church History and Doctrine at Brigham Young University (BYU) and was raised in the Greek Orthodox Church, as part of the BYU Religious Studies Project. The interview will focus on Dr. Roberts' own spiritual journey and Eastern Orthodox theology.
Dr. Tom Roberts presents academic paper at Communal Studies Association Conference
Professor Tom Roberts, who is a Sowers specialist, will be presenting an academic paper at Salt Lake City for the Communal Studies Association Conference October 6-8, 2016. The Communal Studies Association is supported by eight leading universities. Dr. Roberts' paper is entitled "Restoration Theology and Apocalyptic Literature." The scholarly team will be invited to tour the LDS Historical Societies archives and to see the Mormon Tabernacle Choir perform during their rehearsal for the program "The Spoken Word." Dr. Roberts will also share a session with an LDS scholar who will present the Mormon perspective on the Book of Revelation.
In an additional note, Dr. Roberts is currently pursuing a second Ph.D. in Eastern and Orthodox Theology at EUCLID University under the direction of Dr. Laurent Cleenewerck.
